Union Square History.
Named in honor of the pro-Union rallies held there during the Civil War, Union Square’s centerpiece is a 97-foot Corinthian monument that pays tribute to Admiral Dewey’s victory during the Spanish-American War. Jasper O’Farrell created the initial design for the plaza in 1847, and by the 1880s it was a posh residential district. After the 1906 earthquake, Union Square transformed into San Francisco’s most fashionable shopping district, and a redesign in 2002 furthered its reputation as the city’s chicest shopping and people-watching spot.
